Countdown To Midnight Cake

Happy New Year everyone! This recipe is what I like to call semi-homemade. You could absolutely make your own Devil's Food cake from scratch but I think the box is just as good...🙊 Frankly, the frosting is the real star of the show. This is actually the same frosting recipe I used in the Yule Log recipe minus the cocoa powder. It's divine - the perfect combination of butter, heavy cream and sugar.

Countdown To Midnight Cake
1 box Devil's Food Cake Mix

For the frosting & decorating
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
2 cup powdered sugar, sifted
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
5 tbsp heavy cream + more as needed
Pinch kosher salt
Black food gel

1. Follow the directions of the back of the cake mix box. 
2. Once the cakes have cooled, make the frosting.
3. In a large bowl beat butter until smooth. Add sifted powdered sugar and beat until no lumps remain then beat in vanilla, heavy cream, and salt. Apply the clock numbers using the black food gel. Add the sparklers and serve.
